Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve is known for its strong tiger presence and exciting safari experiences. Its forests, bamboo patches, grasslands and water bodies create excellent habitats for tigers and other wildlife.

Pench Tiger Reserve, spread across Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh, offers a different atmosphere. Its forests and open meadows provide beautiful safari landscapes, and the reserve is closely associated with the landscape that inspired Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book.

The biggest advantage of combining them? Two reserves mean two different wildlife experiences. And, of course, more safari opportunities.

Day 1: Arrive in Nagpur and Head Towards Tadoba

For this itinerary, Nagpur is the most practical starting point.

Arrive in Nagpur early and begin your journey towards Tadoba. Depending on your chosen entry gate and accommodation, the drive will take several hours.

My advice here is simple: don't pack too many activities into Day 1. Reach your Tadoba accommodation, check in, have lunch and rest.

If your schedule and safari permit allow, you can take an afternoon or evening safari. Otherwise, enjoy the surroundings and prepare for the next morning.

If this is your first visit to Tadoba, this is also the perfect time to speak with your safari coordinator about the next day's plan.

Day 2: Tadoba – Your Main Tiger Safari Day

This is the day to focus completely on Tadoba. If possible, plan both a morning and afternoon safari.

The early morning drive is particularly special. The forest is cooler, birds are active and animals may be moving after the night.

Keep your eyes open for spotted deer, sambar, gaur, wild boar, langurs and birds. And listen carefully. Sometimes your first clue that a tiger is nearby isn't the tiger itself—it's the alarm calls from other animals.

After the morning safari, return to your resort for breakfast and some rest. Then head out again for your afternoon safari. Remember, no responsible safari operator can promise a tiger sighting. Wildlife moves freely and sightings depend on many factors.

But with two drives in one day, you give yourself more opportunities. Spend your second night in Tadoba.

Day 3: Tadoba to Pench – From One Forest to Another

After breakfast, check out and begin your journey towards Pench. This is your travel day, so don't schedule too much. The journey itself becomes part of the adventure as you move from the Tadoba landscape towards Pench.

Once you arrive, check into your accommodation and relax. If your arrival time allows and a safari is available, you can consider an afternoon safari. Otherwise, save your energy for the following day.

I strongly recommend staying close to your chosen Pench entry gate. Early morning safari starts can mean very early departures, and nobody wants to spend precious sleep time travelling unnecessarily.

Day 4: Explore Pench on Safari

Wake up early and get ready for your Pench tiger safari. Pench has a distinctive charm. The forest feels spacious in many areas, with open meadows, woodland and water bodies creating beautiful views. As you move through the reserve, don't focus only on finding a tiger.

Watch the deer herds. Look for langurs in the trees. Keep an eye on the grasslands. Listen to bird calls. These details make the safari much more rewarding. If you are lucky, your morning drive could end with a tiger sighting. If not, don't be disappointed.

You still have the afternoon to explore. After lunch and some rest, head out for another safari if your permit allows. Four safari drives across two reserves can give you a much richer wildlife experience than trying to fit every possible attraction into five days.

Day 5: One Last Safari and Return to Nagpur

If your travel schedule allows, I recommend one final morning safari. There is something special about your last drive. You know that this may be your final opportunity to see the forest, so every sighting feels a little more valuable.

After the safari, return for breakfast, check out and begin your journey back to Nagpur. Keep plenty of buffer time if you have a flight or train to catch. Don't turn the final day into a stressful race.

A Few Tips Before You Book

• Book safaris first: Accommodation can often be found in several places, but your safari permits and preferred gates should influence your itinerary.
• Don't change hotels every night: For a five-day trip, unnecessary hotel changes waste time. Stay two nights in Tadoba and two nights in Pench whenever possible.
• Choose accommodation near your gate: This makes early morning safari transfers much easier.
• Plan for the weather: Maharashtra can become very hot during the summer months. Carry comfortable clothing, sunglasses, sunscreen, water and a hat.
